Disah English Assistance Program

The Disah English Assistance Program has various facets.

Located in the Wadi Rum area, resident World Associates staff members Lisa and Chuck Dodd partner with local communities to improve livelihoods through providing English training tailored to men who work in the tourism industry and boys who may pursue advanced education. The Dodds use a modified GPA (Growing Participator Approach) curriculum designed for conversational English, whereby participants are taught at various levels of proficiency.

Lisa and Chuck also provide training in marketing communication for local tourist camps that involves website editing and website development. This allows the camps to retain profit by managing their own booking system rather than paying high commissions to outside agencies.  Cross-cultural training empowers these camps to better manage their camps and provide optimal experiences for their guests.

English conversation sessions are also provided for English teachers at the local schools to enhance English training beyond their traditional focus on grammar.  Conversational topics are designed to meet the desires and needs of the students, build life skills, and inspire students to make positive impacts on their community.  These interactive sessions encourage maximum participation and model novel teaching techniques.

During school breaks, World Associates also hosts girls’ clubs to allow girls, who are culturally unable to participate in English courses for boys, to practice and improve their English skills.  Using an interactive approach, the students become more confident in their speaking skills as they engage in meaningful activities and games.
