Tawahudna Project

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) Training for Caregivers

The Tawahudna project was designed in the memory of His Excellency, Jordanian Senator Hazim Al Majali.

Tawahudna is tailored to the Jordanian context and aims to offer a practical and evidence-based strategies for parents, caregivers, and practitioners to customize the care of children with ASD. Our approach is rooted in key principles, including the introduction of emotional regulation tools to enhance understanding and care, providing concise, yet relevant scientific background on the functioning of the autistic brain, and incorporating evidence-based practices applicable for use at home. For example, caregivers are trained in evidence-based techniques for teaching their children to accomplish daily tasks such as using the bathroom and getting dressed.

The project also helps caregivers understand the emotions of their children, and provides tools for how to communicate emotionally. The curriculum particularly addresses the difference between meltdowns and tantrums, offering response strategies for each. We aim to shift the parental/caregiver dynamic from giving orders to spending quality time, and allowing the child to initiate and lead interactions for a more enriching experience. Furthermore, in oder to best serve underprivileged communities, we focus on accessibility by showing caregivers how to make homemade sensory and educational tools. such as weighted blankets made with rice, and how to use salt to teach letter writing (as an alternative to the Western practice of using less-readily available sand).
